Little Penang Street Market

Kim and I visited the Little Penang Street Market today having missed it the past few times. As we got there around noon, most of the stalls were already doing brisk business selling handmade handicrafts and authentic local delicacies (like acars and curries). Kim got herself some nice handmade jewelry while mum bought a tub of Kari Kapitan for dinner. Kim: I only managed to go for the first time today, after nearly SIX years living in Penang! *slaps self* Ooo… I got 2 earrings + a rather unique stainless steel necklace — all for only RM30!

Kim And Mum Looking At Some Earrings

The LPSM is just as much a social event as it is a fun marketplace for the community of Penang with lots of activities for both adults and kids. Today had a photography exhibition, a book reading session, a cardboard sword-making workshop and some good live entertainment all afternoon. I was pleased to see the presence of organisations such as Community_Works which sold hand made soap and other handicrafts for the benefit of St Nicholas’s Home of the Blind, Penang Prison and +Woman. Kim: A lot of the people there were angmohs - the expat community I suppose. And there weren’t an ah-lian in sight! *gasp* — it’s a miracle!

Cosplay was the theme today, so some of the visitors had came dressed as their favourite anime or manga characters. There was also a Cosplay Competition (unfortunately I didn’t stay on for that out as I had futsal with the guys). Kim: Oops, maybe I spoke too soon about the ah-lian part… :P There were chicks dressed in super-short skirts with lots (and I mean LOTS) of lace/bows/frills and huge mascara-ed anime eyes (doh!)… some were in sailor suits as well! Plenty of scope for the fantasies imaginations of the horny average anime fan. :P So, I don’t know if it’s because of the cosplay theme or what, but there were people everywhere taking pictures with their huge ass DSLR cameras! Kim: Aha! Must be all the horny average anime fans :P

If you’ve not been to the LPSM yet, just head on over to Upper Penang Road, by The Garage on the last Sunday every month. Kim: If you’re prone to buying on impulse, don’t bring too much loose cash/small change. You might regret it :)
